This digital collection contains letters from Captain J. E. H. Orr of the City of London Imperial Volunteers (CIVs) to his family describing in detail military engagements, commenting on fellow officers, and giving an account of conditions of the CIVs during the Boer War. The letters were written from Pretoria, Orange River and elsewhere in South Africa from January to September 1900. Included is a journal of correspondence kept by Orr summarizing most of the letters in the collection. His letter of May 22, 1900, refers to a conversation with Winston Churchill who told Orr and another officer that Churchill mentioned the CIVs in his dispatches to the “Morning Post.”
