The efforts of the French Universal Oceanic Canal Company to construct a canal across Panama are documented in this collection. Excavations, laborers and equipment are the main subjects of the images which date between 1883 and 1889. They show views of the French company’s failed attempt during which Ferdinand de Lesseps, builder of the Suez Canal, was its leader. Several of the images are among those recorded on three handwritten lists of photographs and clippings in the collection.
