Jakob Mennel compiled his early 16th-century chronicle of Habsburg genealogy for the Emperor Maximilian I who was very interested in this subject.  The author searched legal, church, and family records and tombstones in Germany over the course of three years in search of purportedly accurate information.  Maximilian died three years before the completion of this work, which also contains an illuminated color portrait of the emperor, his coat of arms, historiated initials, and annotated manicules.
