The Charles K. Macniff Papers digital collection contains letters written by Macniff to his sisters and other family members while he was a corporal in Company B, 20th Regiment New York State Volunteers.  They were written while he was fighting in Northern Virginia and surrounding areas during the years 1861-1864.  There are other letters in the collection written by family members or friends of Macniff during this same time period.  These letters describe the daily life of a Union soldier during the U.S. Civil War.
